SCS MEETING TO DISCUSS THE FORMATION OF A SPACES COMITEE

MEETING TO DISCUSS THE FORMATION OF A SPACES COMMITTEE FOR STOKES CROFT STUDIO.

Hello artists of Stokes Croft Studios. Those of you where at the General Meeting of 1st March will know that it was agreed to call this meeting as it has become apparent there are certain concerns that need to be addressed urgently.

If you where not at the meeting this e-mail is to let everyone know that in two weeks time a meeting will be held to discuss the formation of a “Spaces Committee” for Stokes Croft Studio. Please make yourselves available for MONDAY 21ST MARCH. It is crucial that as many people as possible attend, as important decisions on the running of the studio will be explored.

WHY?

As it has come to our attention that we are currently running at a loss and are in desperate need of funding. Not only to meet our basic costs but to bring the spaces in line with Health & Safety regulations (dull but necessary) and also to invest some money into making SCS a place to be really proud of before it starts to impact more seriously on our own individual monthly costs.

The formation of a Spaces Committee is a good way to start tackling this issue in a focussed and considered manner.

The main goal of the committee is to discuss ideas and ways to generate an income for the studio by the means of redistribution, organisation and clearing of spaces.

WHAT?

The following agenda is largely a result of the last General Meeting held on March 1st and the issues raised for urgent discussion in relation to spaces overall. If anyone would like to add anything in the agenda please contact us to let us know. If there’s anything you wish to discuss it can be added to the agenda prior to the meeting (in the same way as the usual General Meetings).

Agenda.

  • Measuring: Space measuring (i.e. per square footage) Pro’s/Cons, should we stick to this system of paying rent at exact cost  if it is not going to bring in any funds? What are the alternatives to consider?
  • Clearing: Would people be willing to clear out some space in their areas, to make room for new spaces to be built? For instance clearing a storage space that (in all honesty) isn’t desperately needed, or simply even removing a couch.
  • Storage: should people be charged extra for storage space and should this be done by meterage? If people want a communal storage space, the cost could be split between a space, this could also encourage people to clear a new space in their area for new Studio Members as well as bringing in some money.
  • Space redistribution: would some people be willing to move to a smaller part time space for less rent? In order to split a larger space into new multiple spaces for full time artists.
  • Attendance: Does anyone have any ideas on how to manage this issue? Whilst obviously unconstitutional to have people feeling they are forced to come in, an empty studio all year round is a sad sight. And there are at least two people who have not been seen in a year. Either way it is an issue which needs to be discussed.
  • Waiting lists: creation of two separate waiting lists, or a new column on the waiting list detailing full-time/part time usage of space. This could be used to manage the overall working environment to start striking a balance between full-time and part time people, whilst also improving security and a good, productive working atmosphere.
  • Interview Committee: ”Review interview procedures for prospective artists and bring back into a constitutional role of interviewing, a digital form to be submitted including a paragraph written by applicants detailing their intended use of the space, what mediums (digital/painting etc) and thus giving newcomers a formal but professional introduction to the studio. A chance to meet people as well as a good impression of what they can expect, as well as what is expected of them.
  • Income: Any other ways of generating income to make up the short fall we currently have, and generate new and consistent funds for the Studio. An Open Exhibition is a great way for this for example, but is not a possibility in the studio’s current state. -The costs are already going up to existing members, it is time to take action and ensure it doesn’t happen again!
  • Budget: Budget for space building, including tools, paint and materials. This is to avoid people paying out of pocket to do up new spaces. This also comes under certain regulations needed to fall in line with the Health and Safety guidelines we are not yet meeting.

YOUR OPINIONS COUNT

So we are appealing for attendance to gather as many ideas on all these matters!

These can then be discussed further and agreed upon to then be proposed at the next general meeting, and then voted on democratically, at the following General Meeting(s), so your individual input is important in getting things moving forward and most importantly, in the best interests of everyone.

Hope to see you there for your ideas and support.
